I received an email today from an Express Yourself Ecard User. Her Can I Be Honest? card backfired. I was surprised. I’ve used that card a hundred times in my therapy practice and it always brings couples closer together. Clearly, in this case, something had gone terribly wrong.
Apparently, the user decided to tell her sister what she really thought of her sister’s fiancé. (aka, “the Jerk”). With this as a setup, it made sense to me that this was going to be a difficult exchange.
But what turned a difficult exchange into a disaster was the fact that the user decided to deliver this message less than a week before her sister’s wedding. I know, bad move.
If you’re going to tell your sister you think her fiancé is a jerk, be sure you do it before she buys the dress.
The funny thing is, the user still rated the app a 9/10. She said that although her sister had gone nuts, and had unleashed a barrage of grudges, insults and judgments, card had led to the first honest conversation they had had in years about anything important.
I laughed out loud when I read the story. And it reminded me to include in my Tips for Senders a note about Timing.
